Brenda Larson, owner of Dakota Nature and Art said, “We have had many visitors stop in and ask about the
horse…many are so enamored with the life-like look they just have to compliment the artist and his work.  We
hear some say they stopped in Hill City just to see the horse.  It has become an attraction unto itself!"

The full size 1400 pound horse sculpture will be the second acquisition by the Hill City Arts Council for their
ongoing public art program.  The first monumental art project was “The Patriarch,” a bronze bull bison sculpture
by Peggy Detmers that greets visitors to Hill City at the intersection of Main Street and Railroad Avenue.

Arts Council President Janna Emmel is excited about the new project:  “Iron Star” received the most votes from
the public during our Sculpture in the Hills Art Show.  It’s a beautiful and unique work of art and is another
positive outgrowth of our commitment to making Hill City a place to find interesting and fun art for everyone.”

About the Artist, John Lopez:  Sculptor John Lopez was raised on a ranch near Lemmon, South Dakota.  His
western and rodeo themed bronzes have been sold across the country.  For the past nine years, John has been
working on the City of Presidents project in Rapid City for which he sculpted John Adams, John F. Kennedy and
Teddy Roosevelt.  In the past few years John has begun to experiment with his style of art and branch out into
other media, including scrap iron, something that all ranches have in one form or another.  Whether cast bronze
or found objects, John’s goal is to continue to move people with his art.
