                                                                                   Come Play with Us!

For those of us on the Board of Directors of the Hill City Arts Council, we’ve discovered that
working for the arts in Hill City comes with many opportunities to play, too.  Music, sculpture,
film, design – the Hill City Arts Council creates opportunities to learn, and to have fun.  We’re
also focused on contributing to our creative economy, a long-term effort in partnership with
others in our community.  Here’s where we are in 2009/2010:

For the second year, the Arts Council organized and hosted “Sculpture in the Hills,” a 2-day fine art
sculpture show and sale, the only of its kind in our region.  We look forward to hosting our third
show
June 26 - 27, 2010.

One exciting result from
Sculpture in the Hills is our decision to purchase Iron Star, the People’s
Choice-winning sculpture by South Dakota artist John Lopez.  The
life-size horse sculpture can be
seen on Hill City’s Main Street.  Iron Star marks the second public art acquisition initiated by the
Arts Council, following Patriarch, the bronze bison by Peg Detmers that now resides at Railroad
Avenue and Main Street.

Our fund-raising kickoff event for the purchase of Iron Star will be October 24 when we
draw for
the winner of the custom motorcycle
we’ve been raffling this past year.  Proceeds from the raffle
will help us purchase Iron Star
.  See the enclosed invitation for the HORSE POWER event on
October 24.

With Hill City’s Economic Development Corporation and the City of Hill City, we hosted “Design:
SD – Project Hill City,”
October 1 through 3, 2009.  Seventeen architects, planners and artists toured
and listened to our community, then drafted visual ideas for Hill City’s future.  Watch for a report
coming soon.

Don’t miss the
classical guitar concert on Friday, October 9 with William Feasley at the Hill City High
School Theater.  Admission is only $5.00.

Beginning
January 9, 2010, the Arts Council will host another fun year of “Open Stage” with local
musicians.
Join us at Chute Roosters this year.

In April, with Art of the Hills magazine, we’ll host an
Art and Architecture symposium as a follow-
up to Design: Hill City.

We’ll again support
art in the schools with scholarships and other needed programs.  Get involved
with the Student Arts Booster Club!

So, come play with us!  Join the Hill City Arts Council. **
