FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

More than 2500 attend Third Annual Sculpture in the Hills

More than 2500 people attended “Sculpture in the Hills” Show & Sale
June 26-27.  Giant sculptures stood outside the event tent on  Hill  City ’s
Main Street , while 24 artists from  South Dakota ,  Colorado ,  New
Mexico ,  Indiana ,  Montana and  Minnesota impressed visitors inside
the tent with sculptures of all sizes in bronze, glass, stone and mixed
media.  Host and Hill City Arts Council President Janna Emmel said,
“Artists and visitors loved the new location of the event – we were more
visible to people passing through  Hill  City , many of whom said they
stopped in  Hill  City when they saw the big sculptures.”

In addition to selling their work, the show’s artists also received awards
for Best of Show and People’s Choice.  The Best of Show awards were
presented on Friday night during the Sneak Preview Party.  The popular
ticketed event is for sponsors and anyone interested in seeing the show
before it opens to the public on Saturday.  “Good food, refreshments,
music, and beautiful art create a great atmosphere for the Show’s
opening, adds Emmel.”  Black Hills Jurors Dale Lamphere and Darrel
Nelson chose Jared and Nicole Davis’ elegant glass “Jupiter Swan Red”
as Best of Show.  Adam Schulz received second place for his bronze
“Galatea,” and former Hill City resident Tim Nimmo won 3rd for
“Autumn Winds.”

Almost 1000 votes were cast by the Show’s visitors for People’s Choice.
Every artist in the show received votes from the public, but again it was
South Dakota sculptor John Lopez who won first place – his third year
winning the top prize from the public.  His hybrid metal bison sculpture
“Old Blue” won top honors on Sunday.  Bronze artist Kris Voss took
home the second place prize and the  Davis ’ were third place.

New to the show this year was a silent auction where visitors
throughout the weekend could bid on select pieces.  Merlene Broer, Hill
City Arts Council, oversaw the event:  “My phone stayed hot on a few of
those pieces as bidders kept in contact with the show to track their
bids.  It was a lot of fun and a success for the show.”  Almost $3000 was
raised which was shared by the artist and the Hill City Arts Council.

Artists are already signing up for next year’s show, June 25-26, 2011.
