City, State
Working Towards a Creative Economy
In October 2008 the Arts Council signed a partnership proposal
with the Economic Development Corporation to further the
progress of Hill City’s “creative economy.”  Among South Dakota
towns, Hill City is often cited as an “arts community.”  Its
momentum as a creative sector is widely known.  The proof lies in
the last five to ten years, during which Hill City has attracted artists
and arts, culture-related businesses, including fine art galleries, a
bronze foundry, an art magazine and the state’s primary database
of artists.  The partnership goals are to:

•        Develop and implement a comprehensive 5-year plan to
strengthen the Creative Economy in Hill City.
•        Strengthen the existing business community, and develop a
lens through which to view future business opportunities.
•        Extend the season that draws “Cultural Tourists” by first
lengthening the shoulder season and then working toward
a twelve-month year.
•        Maximize effectiveness by creating community—wide
participation and developing a supportive infrastructure.
•        Advocate for the arts and seek arts funding through the
State of South Dakota and other sources.
